The EU’s Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive (AIFMD) was introduced in 2013 to enhance investor protections.

Investment managers operating under the AIFMD must have an independent alternative investment fund manager (AIFM) who collaborates with a depositary to oversee their fund activities in certain situations.

More recently, the EU has established an action plan on financing sustainable growth, adding requirements for fund managers through regulatory updates on said AIFMD, and with new regulations like the EU Taxonomy.
